CD NEW AND SEALED

The Band was founded in 1992 in Fermo (Italy) and began writing very soon his own repertoire of original songs. Then, several concerts were followed to record the first demo tape “Hellbringer” in 1995. It received a good response in Italy, Germany and Greece too.

Afterward, because of a formation’s change, they recorded another demo tape in 1999 “Gargoyles”; it also well recorded and reviewed by European and Italian Critic. However, one step away from Record Deal, the Band changed again vocalist and bassist.

Then, they resumed recording only in 2003 with the EP “My Daemons” and from there to a year they released their first album in November 2004, entitled “12th Level”. It received a very good response by audience and Italian and European critics too. They did 2 years of Tour; some dates with Blaze, Shaaman and Lacuna Coil. But afterward, they stopped again for a short period, even for a formation change. Live Concerts were resumed, and the Band was successful to bring out new album “Border Wild” in 2009. It was also very well reviewed and accepted by audience, enough to take them into three years of live concerts in Italy, and on European Tour with Tarja and some dates supporting Exodus. Afterward, another formation’s change made them stop, but fortunately, only for a short period. Indeed, they restart with new live dates, again on tour with Tarja and supporting WASP. In 2015 they record their new album “New Rebirth”, based on Italian and European Resurgence’s period of 1800; as an example and inspiration to the problems that trouble Italy, Europe and all the world in this historical period.

New Album- “INDEPENDENCE”: comes out for the Alpha Omega label on January 25th 2019 for Italy in February for the rest of the world. This album tells about the first the first part of the Italian Risorgimento, from Naple’s Reign ruled by King Murat until Mazzini’s Roman Republic, including episodes on Mille (The Expedition of the Thousand) and Brigandage, with some of their main characters .

2 recensioni per SCALA MERCALLI Independence

  2. From Metalgods TV: Italian Heavy/Power Metal Quintet, Scala Mercalli, was formed in 1992 and consists of Christian Bartolacci [Vocals], Clemente Cattalani [Lead & Rhythm Guitar], Cristiano Cellini [Lead & Rhythm Guitar], Sergio Ciccoli [Drums], and Giusy Bettei [Bass].

The band released two demos and an E.P. between 1996 and 2003, before releasing its debut full-length album in 2005. In the ten years since, two further full lengths were released, the last being “New Rebirth” in 2015. January of this year saw Scala Mercalli release a fourth full-length album with “Independence” being released via Alpha Omega.

“Independence” is a concept album which contains eleven tracks and has a running time of almost 47 minutes. The album tells the story about the first part of the Italian Risorgimento [the period of and the movement for the political unification of Italy in the 19th century], from Naples’ Reign ruled by King Murat, until Mazzini’s Roman Republic. The story includes episodes on Mille [The Expedition of The Thousand] and Brigandage, a period where people fought side by side and contributed towards building the Italian nation.

Scala Mercalli state that, “This project is about some events we consider to be of great importance in our country’s history. They remind us of how important it has been for a people dominated for years by foreign powers, to fight for ideals of unity and freedom.”

History aside, what about the music? A bell chimes through the speakers as the opening sequences of the album are presented by Scala Mercalli with instrumental/intro “The Crossing On The Sea”. The soundscapes build to a crescendo before an impressive riff announces the arrival of “The 1000 [Calatafimi Battle]”, and so the battle commences with a bombastic Heavy/Power Metal onslaught. “Honest Brigands” swiftly follows with an impressive chugging rhythm that’ll stretch those neck muscles. The twin guitar attack of Clemente and Cristiano is an addictive listen, with some great solos to boot, a feat that’s repeated with the excellent “Be Strong”. It’s a call to arms and the words “Be Strong” bounce around my mind, reminding me to be strong myself during a particularly tough time in my personal life, which has left me feeling extremely vulnerable. Thank you, Scala Mercalli! The Last Defence [Roma-Gianicolo 1849]” begins with beautiful guitar strings, before more punishing riffs pound the senses, as the band launch into another monstrous musical number. Together with its predecessor, this number just begs to be repeated numerous times and the shredding guitar solo is outstanding! “Never Surrender” is announced by Sergio’s drums, before those familiar guitars enter. Christian lets rip with a powerful scream and Giusy’s heavy bass joins as the band send you into a headbanging frenzy, which will continue with the powerful “Tolentino 1815”. I really like Sergio’s drumming throughout this number, and the song’s heavy rhythm is an absolute joy to the ears.
The current trend of heavy goodness continues into the excellent pairing of “White Death” and “Whisper Of The Night”. Both numbers blast past you, clearing the way for the heavy ballad-type “Anita [Ana Maria de Jesus Ribeiro da Silva]”. Proceedings close with the heavy and operatic “Fratelli d’Italia [Italian Anthem]”. A fitting end to a fine album.

The truth is that this album review arrived at a time when I’ve been going through an extremely turbulent time in my personal life. My walls have crumbled, and my mind is surrounded by darkness, fear, and anxiety. Yet, even though “Independence” took some time to get into, my perseverance has been rewarded with an album that has helped me escape to another place within my mind. A place where the fighter in me lies await. This album has helped me more than I thought it ever could. It’s strange how music can have such a profound effect on us as individuals, and “Independence” is one of those albums. Because of this reason alone, this album will be on continuous rotation for some time to come.

The music within “Independence” has a wonderful ability of lifting the spirits with its stories of unity and freedom. The Heavy/Power Metal style of Scala Mercalli is the perfect way such stories are told. This album is beautiful, bombastic, and full of variety. These Italians are definitely worth checking out.
